AMC’s “The Walking Dead” got the katana wielding Michonne at the beginning of this year’s season in the form of actress Danai Gurira and the bonus of The Governor as the season’s major villain, portrayed by David Morrissey — but according to series creator Robert Kirkman, fans of the comic have at least one more character coming their way.
In an interview with EW.com Kirkman stated the December 2 fall finale of the AMC drama will feature a new character straight from “The Walking Dead” comic.
“There’s a new character added,” Kirkman told EW. “A big deal fan favorite from the comic book is introduced into the show in this episode, so be on the lookout for that.”
EW speculates that it might be Tyreese, a fan-favorite character from early in the comic series — and Kirkman could neither confirm nor deny.
“I don’t know, man!” he said. “I don’t know. I got no clue!”
Tyreese, a former NFL Linebacker, bouncer and car salesman, first appeared in “The Walking Dead” #7 and joined Rick Grimes’ initial group of survivors with his daughter, Julie, and her boyfriend, Chris. Tyreese was widely regarded as the co-leader of the survivors alongside Rick, despite conflicts between the two later on in the series, until his death at the hands of the Governor in “The Walking Dead” #46.
Although the series creator evaded questions about the possibility of Tyreese joining the cast, EW reports rumors of “The Wire” actor Chad Coleman — a dead ringer for Charlie Adlard’s depiction of Tyreese in the comic — has been spotted around the show’s Atlanta filming area. Whoever the fan-favorite character is, they’ll show up on the midseason finale December 2.1
