Will Guy Ritchie Helm Warner Bros.’ Arthurian Epic?

While relatively recent films like 2004’s King Arthur and 2007’s The Last Legion didn’t exactly light the world on fire, Warner Bros. seems determined to return Arthurian legend to the big screen, and in a big way.

According to Deadline, the studio hopes to produce an epic six-movie fantasy retelling of the Arthur story created Joby Harold (Awake), who wrote the first installment. Guy Ritchie, who’s filming Warner Bros.’ adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is reportedly looking to direct. He had previously been developing his own King Arthur project with his partner Lionel Wigram.

The studio previously had been set to stage David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, with Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) in the starring roles (Gary Oldman was courted to play Merlin). However, the project was abruptly shelved in late 2011 amid budget concerns, only to be dusted off in March 2012 when Colin Farrell entered talks for one of the lead roles. Alas, scheduling conflicts forced the actor to withdraw within a month, leaving the film dead in the water.
