When We First Met – Flash’s Rogues

In this feature we spotlight the various characters, phrases, objects or events that eventually became notable parts of comic lore, like the first time someone said, “Avengers Assemble!” or the first appearance of Batman’s giant penny or the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth or the first time Spider-Man’s face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter. Stuff like that. Here is an archive of all the When We First Met features so far! Check ’em out!

With the Flash’s first season over, I thought it’d be nice to look at the first comic book appearances of the various villains the Flash faced during this past season…

I’ll cover them in the order that they appeared on the series…

First up is the Mark Mardon, Weather Wizard and his brother Clyde, who both appeared (including the death of one brother) in Flash #110, by John Broome, Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson…

Next is Danton Black, Multiplex, who debuted in the first issue of Firestorm (by Gerry Conway, Al Milgrom, Klaus Janson and Joe Rubinstein) on the same page as Martin Stein’s first appearance!

By the way, gotta love Martin Stein’s reaction to this news…

Unstable much?

He didn’t show up AS Multiplex until the second issue, where he realized that something happened to him at the same explosion that created Firestorm…

and then he made his Multiplex debut…

Next is Kyle Nimbus, The Mist, who made his start in Adventure Comics #67 (by Alfred Bester and Jack Burnley – although I’ve often seen Gardner Fox credited as creating him, it seems like Bester wrote his first appearance, though, not Fox), as Starman fights off a group of invisible men until their ringleader reveals himself…

Next is one of the very earliest Rogues, Leonard Snart, Captain Cold, who made his bow in Showcase #8 (by John Broome, Carmine Infantino and Frank Giacoia)…

Cold’s partner in crime, Heat Wave (Mick Rory), showed up in Flash #140 (by Broome, Infantino and Joe Giella) in a bizarre story involving both men becoming obsessed with a TV personality known as Dream Girl…

On the next page, meet the next batch of villains!
