Every day this week will see me feature a brand-new Cool Comic Book Moment. For this week only, I'll be specifically featuring cool moments that happened just this year. Here is an archive of all the past cool comic moments that I've featured so far.

Today we continue with the not-so-final fate of the heroic warrior Rikard in Helheim #1 by Cullen Bunn and Joelle Jones (note he isn't actually called Rikard the Brave in the comic. I just felt weird simply saying "Rikard," so I added the "the Brave")...

Rikard was the leader of a tribe of vikings in 560 when he fell in love with a beautiful young woman named Bera. The only problem was that an evil witch wanted to kill Bera. Rikard, being a heroic sort of guy, refused to give up his love, so he waged war on the witch and her demonic forces, which was quite difficult considering her ability to use the undead as her soldiers.

Well, in the middle of an attack by the witch's undead soldiers, Rikard's father decided that Bera was not worth it anymore so he tried to kill her himself. Rikard interceded and ended up sacrificing himself for her...

Man, Joelle Jones drew the hell out of that beheading!

The battle ended there, and the next morning, we see Rikard's father and his friend mourning Rikard's passing, but something else is afoot...

Talk about a bad ass twist to open up a series! Bera is just as bad as the OTHER witch! What an awesome idea by Bunn. Such begins the second "life" of Rickard as, in effect, a Frankenstein-esque monster. Will he manage to break free from Bera's control? Find out in the Helheim series! #3 just came out today!
