WB Returning to I Am Legend

Warner Bros. is moving head with plans for a follow-up to I Am Legend, the 2007 sci-fi film that starred Will Smith as a military scientist immune to a virus that’s killed most of humanity.

According to Deadline, the studio has closed a deal with producer Akiva Goldsman and Overbrook Entertainment for the new installment, which, contrary to three-year-old rumors, apparently isn’t a sequel. The hope of course is for Smith to reprise his role as virologist Robert Neville, who fought off mutated, cannibalistic humans in post-apocalyptic New York City while searching for a cure. Grace of Monaco screenwriter Arash Amel is penning the script for the new installment.

Director Francis Lawrence’s 2007 film, an adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, grossed $585 million worldwide.
