Middle Men actors Giovanni Ribisi has been recruited for Warner Bros.’ The Gangster Squad, the period crime drama from Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, Deadline reports.
He’ll join an impressive cast that stars Sean Penn as mob boss Mickey Cohen, and Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin as members of a Los Angeles police task force assigned to bring him down. Michael Pena and Anthony Mackie are also on board, with Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston said to be in negotiations for a role.
The film is based on “L.A. Noir: Tales from the Gangster Squad,” a seven-part series published in 2008 by the Los Angeles Times about the elite Los Angeles Police Department unit formed in 1946 to keep East Coast Mafia figures out of the city. The squad’s members, who were to employ an “anything goes” approach, had no office — just two unmarked cars — and would continue to be listed on their stations’ rosters. “They’d simply gather ‘intelligence’ and be available for other chores,” the newspaper wrote. “In effect, they would not exist.”
Will Beall, writer and executive story editor for ABC’s Castle, penned the screenplay.
