WB Apparently ‘Eager’ For Potter’s David Yates To Helm Fables Movie

When last we left Fables, Vertigo’s acclaimed modern fairy-tale series, creator Bill Willingham had declared the long-discussed ABC television adaptation “probably dead.” But what about the occasionally rumored movie?

In one of the innumerable articles pondering what Warner Bros. will do now that its Harry Potter cash cow is coming to an end, Vulture contends the studio is “eager” to put Deathly Hallows director on a Fables movie — or an adaptation of Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic novel The Stand. There’s also that Al Capone movie Cicero that Yates has been developing, reportedly with Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) now attached to star.

But back to Fables, which apparently would follow the plot of the comic’s first story arc, “Legends in Exile,” which introduced the exiled characters from folklore and fairy tales living in exclusive luxury apartment building in Manhattan known as Fabletown. When Snow White’s party-girl sister Rose Red is seemingly murdered, it’s up to Sheriff Bigby — the reformed Big Bad Wolf — to discover whether the culprit is her ex-lover Bluebeard, the notorious wife killer, or her current boyfriend Jack, of beanstalk fame.

It’s not the first time Yates has been mentioned in connection with the project: The rumor first surfaced a little over a year ago, when the ABC series still seemed like an outside possibility. Since then, of course, the networks have moved forward with their own modern twists on fairy tales — NBC with Grimm and ABC with Once Upon a Time.
