Danish actress Connie Nielsen, best known for her role in "Gladiator," has been cast as Hippolyta in Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She joins a cast in director Patty Jenkins' film that includes Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis and Ewen Bremner.

The mother of Princess Diana, aka Wonder Woman, Hippolyta was introduced alongside her daughter in 1941's "All Star Comics" #8. She's been a mainstay of DC Comics effectively ever since, and even assumed the mantle of Wonder Woman at one point.

Nielsen's credits also include "The Devil's Advocate," "Mission to Mars," "One Hour Photo" and the television series "Boss" and "The Following."

"Wonder Woman" is now filming in the United Kingdom and Italy for release on June 23, 2017.
