Hollywood has been spending so much time grabbing video game properties in the past few years that it’s no longer surprising when a new project is announced — although it can be perplexing that the rights weren’t snatched up earlier.
Take Minecraft, for example. This open-world environment-building game has been a huge hit, selling 35 million copies, but Heat Vision reports that Warner Bros. has only now scored the rights to create a movie based on the game.
Producer Roy Lee recently worked on another block-based film that was wildly successful, The LEGO Movie, so he has some experience in this relatively small subgenre. Much like LEGO, Minecraft offers a huge sandbox for potential writers to play with in an effort to construct a film.
