“Braveheart” star Mel Gibson might just join the DC Extended Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson is reportedly in talks to direct the sequel to David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad,” which hit theaters last summer.
According to the report, no official offer has been made; however, Gibson — who is in early talks with the studio — is currently “familiarizing himself with the material.” Nevertheless, it appears as though the studio is pursuing other directors as well, including Daniel Espinosa. Warner Bros. hasn’t responded to THR’s request for comment.
Even as Warner Bros. continues to pursue the “Suicide Squad” sequel, few details are known about the plot or direction at this time. Most of the cast — including Margot Robbie and Will Smith — are expected to return.
Gibson is best known for his roles in “Braveheart,” “The Patriot” and “Lethal Weapon,” but he also has several directing credits to his name. He helmed “The Passion of the Christ,” which took theaters by storm in 2004, and he also directed 2006’s “Apocalypto.” His most recent directorial effort, “Hacksaw Ridge,” has been nominated for an Oscar.
Though Ayer helmed the first “Suicide Squad” film, he’ll have his hands full directing “Gotham City Sirens.” Announced in May, “Gotham City Sirens” has been characterized not as a Harley Quinn solo outing or a sequel to “Suicide Squad” sequel, but rather an ensemble film that will feature several of DC Comics’ female heroes and villains. Margot Robbie is set not only to reprise her “Suicide Squad” role as Harley Quinn but also executive produce through her first-look deal with Warner Bros. She reportedly pitched the idea for the film to the studio. Although “Suicide Squad” received largely negative reviews, the David Ayer film surpassed the first “Iron Man” film at the global box office with a total of $318m.
Based on the DC Comics team, “Suicide Squad” stars Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Adam Beach as Slipknot. The movie is currently available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
The “Suicide Squad” sequel does not yet have an official release date.
