Time for a new rant about the pointlessness of a War Games reboot. The latest word is that MGM has set Noah Oppenheim to deliver a script. A quick peek at his IMDb page reveals a fair bit of non-fiction TV experience, but Deadline‘s report on the news also notes that Oppenheim penned screenplays for the Jackie Onassis biopic Jackie, Summit’s upcoming Houdini biopic and Fox’s Maze Runner.
Oppenheim’s script will land in the hands of King of Kong director Seth Gordon, who will helm the reboot. MGM has given Gordon a “wide berth” in creating “a new take on the tale,” Deadline notes … at which point I have to ask why we’re even creating the connection to War Games to begin with? I’d rather see the finished product and naturally compare it to War Games because of its similar approach than have another stated reboot crammed down my throat.
Basically … I still think this is a terrible, terrible idea. War Games doesn’t need a remake or a reboot or a sequel or a spin-off. It just needs to be left alone as a classic 1983 thriller, and a product of our now-outdated Cold War mindset, starring Matthew Broderick.
