Wanted Sequel ‘Will Be Shocking,’ Timur Bekmambetov Promises

Defying expectations, it looks as if the sequel to Timur Bekmambetov’s 2008 action film Wanted could come together after all. Oh, sure, Universal Pictures brought back original screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas in September, but with Angelina Jolie out of the picture and the director increasingly busy, Wanted 2 seemed unlikely to move forward.

However, while making the press rounds for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Bekmambetov revealed to The Playlist that he’s recently — finally — had a breakthrough with the sequel.

“An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago,” he said. “Because we stopped, we didn’t know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we’re on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking.”

Very loosely based on the comic-book miniseries by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, Wanted starred James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson, a frustrated accountant who discovers he’s the son of a professional assassin and decides to join the thousand-year-old secret society for which his father worked. The film, which grossed about $340 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, also starred Jolie as Fox, who becomes Wesley’s mentor, and Morgan Freeman as Sloan.

The sequel would would pick up following the events of the first, although obviously without Jolie and Freeman’s characters. “It’s a continuation of the story, with Wesley Gibson,” Bekmambetov said. “Other people are dead, you know, we can’t bring them back. The story is the same character, same mythology, but it’s got a great twist.”
