As Disney prepares to launch its own premium streaming service Disney+, its subsidiary company Marvel Studios has revealed it has whole development slate of upcoming television miniseries set throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and directly overseen by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. One of those series announced is WandaVision, with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their respective roles as the Scarlet Witch and Vision.

So far, the upcoming series has released a single piece of painted key art, showing Vision and Wanda Maximoff in a suburban 1950s setting while their shadows reveal their true selves including the hinted first appearance of Wanda in her classic comic book outfit. Here's everything we currently know about WandaVision and what the subtle Easter Egg could entail for the story.

WandaVision

While plot details have been kept tightly under wraps for WandaVision, the miniseries is expected to run for six episodes on Disney+ sometime in Spring 2021 shortly ahead of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Feige and Olsen have both confirmed that Scarlet Witch's role in the upcoming miniseries will tie into the Doctor Strange sequel though, as the film is currently being written, the exact nature of the miniseries informing the film are still unknown.

With principal photography under showrunner Jac Schaeffer expected to begin next month, additional cast members including Kat Dennings and Randall Park reprising their previous MCU roles as Thor's Darcy Lewis and Ant-Man and the Wasp's Jimmy Woo, respectively. Kathryn Hahn will appear as a nosy neighbor while Teyonah Parris will appear as an adult Monica Rambeau, with a child version of the character previously appearing in this year's Captain Marvel.

Scarlet Witch and the Comics

Dark Scarlet Witch And The Avengers

One of the major elements about Scarlet Witch in the comics is her dangerous mental instability that has resulted in her going out of control and threatening her fellow Avengers on multiple occasions including the seminal storyline Avengers Disassembled. The instability is linked with the nature of Wanda's powers derived from chaos magic. While the MCU Wanda has never had full tilt bouts of villainy other than being manipulated by Ultron at the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, she has always been depicted one of the darker, more emotional members of the team.

Having lost her brother in Age of Ultron and Vision during Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda is at her personal lowest point. When describing WandaVision's approach, Bettany noted it had a twisted sitcom feel yet completely defied conventional genre constraints. Perhaps in her continued grief of losing Vision, Wanda taps into previously unseen depths of her power to create the blissful domestic life with him stolen from her by Thanos.

The Mystery of the Headpiece

Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff

While Vision's superhero shadow is perfectly in line with past depictions of the character, Wanda's shadow with the comic book headpiece is a bit more confusing; the character has never actually worn it during her time in the MCU. This could hint at her embracing her superhero side a bit more but also her full magical potential -- previously, it had just been used for telekinesis and limited mind control instead of completely reshaping reality.

The true nature of Wanda's powers in the MCU have never been fully explored but seemingly derived from experiments she endured by Hydra and their use of the Mind Stone. This may soon change, with the comic headpiece signifying terrifying new depths of power for the Scarlet Witch while teeing up her big screen return in The Multiverse of Madness, described as the MCU's first full venture into horror. And with the miniseries' story reportedly taking inspiration from Tom King and Gabriel Walta's acclaimed run on Vision, the idyllic suburban life that Wanda and Vision find themselves in will likely have sinister secrets festering under the surface.
