Guillermo del Toro isn’t the only one in Hollywood banking on giant robots. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd it teaming with Toei Animation and All Nippon Entertainment Works to turn the anime Gaiking into a live-action feature film.
Gaiking falls into the Super Mecha robot genre of anime, which is pretty-self explanatory. The short-lived series only aired between 1976 and 1977 but produced 44 episodes about a one-time baseball star piloting a giant robot to help defend the Earth against alien invaders. The robot itself was incorporated into Mattel’s Shogun Warriors toy line, which imported several different mechs from various sources.
At this point, no writers or directors are attached to the project.
