“Walking Dead” Producer Says Spinoff Has Not Yet Been Picked Up

While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, “Walking Dead” executive producer Gale Anne Hurd gave a somewhat surprising update regarding the still-untitled “Walking Dead” spinoff. Hurd revealed that the pilot episode wrapped production on February 6, but noted that she’s not sure when — or even if — it will air on AMC.

“We haven’t been picked up to series yet,” said Hurd of the spinoff series. While this statement doesn’t contradict anything that has previously been said about the spinoff, it does seem a bit surprising considering how big of a blockbuster “The Walking Dead” has turned into over the course of its five seasons. The recent 2015 premiere drew in 15.6 million viewers.

The series, which has been operating under the production codename “Cobalt,” received a pilot order from AMC back in September. The series will be set in the same zombie apocalypse at the center of “The Walking Dead” but will instead focus on a new setting far away from the original series southern roots. Previous rumors had the series set in Los Angeles, although that has yet to be confirmed.

The series will star Cliff Curtis as divorced teacher Sean Cabrera and Kim Dickens as the female lead. Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey are also attached to star as Dickens’ children. Adam Davidson, who previously helmed episodes of “Friday Night Lights” and “Fringe,” directed the recently-wrapped pilot. The companion series will be executive produced by “The Walking Dead’s” Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.
