WARNING:Spoilers follow for recent episodes of “The Walking Dead.”

While Hilltop's Paul Rovia is nicknamed "Jesus" for his long hair and handsome bohemian looks, he might also be living up to the moniker by providing a little hope to downcast viewers of "The Walking Dead."

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Tom Payne, the actor portraying Rovia, may have let slip that viewers can at least rest a little easier knowing Carl Grimes, his recent unexpected partner on a secret trip to the Saviors' compound, should live to fight another day.

"I think Carl is the future of the show,” Payne said before backtracking a bit. “I mean, is the future of the comic books, I think.”

Everyone's favorite "future serial killer" was last seen in the midst of what looked to be an attempt at a hasty assassination plot against the series' new big bad, Negan. Of course, as any casual watcher of "The Walking Dead" knows by now, things will almost certainly go awry for the two, leading many to worry about the fate of Chandler Riggs' Carl, whose seven-year contract expired earlier this month.

“At the end of the day, I think Carl is the guy at the end on the last page,” he added. “And I don’t know if they’ll go that way on the TV show, but I think it would be a logical place for them to go...Who knows?"

Given the quick clarification, it seems that we'll be seeing Carl stick around, at least for the time being. But that's not exactly saying much as the pair make their way into Savior territory.

Airing Sundays at 9 pm ET/PT on AMC, "The Walking Dead" stars Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes, Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, Melissa McBride as Carol Peleteir, Steven Yeun as Glenn Rhee, Lauren Cohan as Maggie Green, Danai Gurira as Michonne and more.
