DC's villains united to bring the publisher to the #1 position for September
Diamond Comics has released its Top Ten charts for products released in September 2013, which finds DC Comics handily taking the top spot by a large margin thanks to the launch of "Forever Evil" and the Villains Month one-shots. Overall, DC accounted for 40.39% of the direct market's Dollar Share and 45.17% of its Unit Share to second place Marvel's 28.49% and 29.83%. Image Comics ranked third, with IDW Publishing and Dark Horse accounting for the number 4 and 5 positions, respectively.
Sales were up dramatically over August, with the DC event leading the industry to a nearly 32% dollar increase over the previous month. And the increase wasn't just seen in the monthly comics -- graphic novel sales shot up 12% over August's figures. Year to year, comics sales increased 33.9% in dollars and 26.97% in units over 2012, while graphic novel sales were up 1.76% in dollars with a decline of 2.96% in units.
The best selling comic of the month was, to nobody's surprise, Geoff Johns' "Forever Evil" #1. The biggest seller amongst the Villains Month one-shots was the Joker issue, followed by The Riddler, landing in positions 5 and 6, respectively. Bane checked in at #8 while Batman's rogues solidified their top of the food chain position the DCU with the Penguin landing at #10. Marvel nailed down the 2-4 positions in the top ten with "Infinity" #2 & #3 and "X-Men: Battle of the Atom" #1, with the debut of "Mighty Avengers" at #7 and "Avengers" #19 at #9.
Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta's first "East of West" collection landed in the top spot for graphic novels, with the publisher ultimately taking 5 of the positions thanks to "Walking Dead" and "Saga."
