A court in Hawaii is allowing an avid gamer to sue the makers of his favorite videogame for being too addictive for his own good. This could end up being great.
The THR, Esq. blog is reporting that Craig Smallwood is suing NCSoft over its MMORPG Lineage II, claiming that it is so addictive that it resulted in his being hospitalized for three weeks, and requiring therapy so as to allow him not to play it. Hawaiian federal judge Alan Kay has denied NCSoft’s attempts to get the case thrown out, which means that the company is going to have to argue against their own product’s appeal in court… or else, argue that Smallwood, who will be representing himself, simply and literally doesn’t know when to quit. The added bonus for rubberneckers? The reason Smallwood stopped playing the game and uncovered the depth of his addiction was that he was banned by NCSoft for, they claim, attempting to engage in real money transfers within the game. I admit, I want a ringside seat.
