For the past year, DC's Vertigo imprint has been looking to upend expectations on its horror-tinged line with its "Defy" branding. And starting this fall, the publisher will extend that effort by letting readers judge their books by the covers.

IGN this weekend debuted the covers for Vertigo's October offerings, and in a novel twist, the imprint will begin its stories there -with panels, word balloons and other techniques kicking off the proceedings immediately on the cover.

Joining titles like "Fables," "Fairest" and "Astro City" will be newer offerings including "Coffin Hill," "Hinterkind," "Federal Bureau of Physics" and "Dead Boy Detectives."

Seeing how the cover artists mesh with the interiors and other practical effects of the move will wait until the issues go on sale, but for now, readers can mentally add one more story page to Vertigo's offerings.
