Now we get to the greatest Valiant villain.
Like a lot of great villains, Toyo Harada (created by Jim Shooter) did not see himself AS a villain. Instead, Harada felt that he was simply doing what it took to protect Earth. When he was young, he came to the determination that if Earth were to keep going down its current path, we would all destroy each other. So Harada, one of the most powerful beings on Earth (with massive psionic powers, such as telepathy, telekinesis, mind-control), decided that the best way to fix the planet would be for him to rule it as a just despot.
To do so, he founded the Harbinger Foundation, where he would collect superpowered beings (whose latent powers he would trigger with his powers) to serve under his control.
Harada was not one to fight battles himself, for he had so many minions to do it instead (his Eggbreakers, he called them).
As I’ve said in the past, Valiant seemed to pass their villains around a lot, but in the case of Harada, it just makes sense. A man like Harada, who had his finger in a lot of different pots, it would be strange if he DIDN’T come into contact with the various other Valiant characters.
Harada’s biggest nemesis was young Pete Stanchek, the only other person on Earth as powerful as Harada.
Maurice Fontenot wrote a great showdown between the two in Harbinger #25…
Hopefully, Harada will pop up whenever Valiant manages to make comics again.
