"Mission: Impossible" star Tom Cruise is in talks to join Universal's reboot of "The Mummy." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio hopes to find an actor with enough star power to anchor the film, and Cruise fits the bill.

“The Mummy” is intended to mark the official launch of Universal Pictures’ new shared monster universe. Jon Spaihts penned the script, which shifts the film into modern day; however, no other details about the plot have been released.

Beyond “The Mummy,” Universal reportedly has remakes of “Van Helsing,” “The Wolf Man” and “Creature From the Black Lagoon” in development.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, "The Mummy" is set for release on March 24, 2017.
