It was a good weekend for vampires, werewolves, pilots, orphans and burned spies as well as the movie industry all around. Underworld: Awakening — the fourth in the series of vampire-versus-werewolf flicks, most of which starred Kate Beckinsale — took the top spot at the box office, raking in $25.4 million. However, Beckinsale wasn’t the only dangerous woman on the list, as Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, starring MMA fighter Gina Carano, grabbed the fifth spot with $9 million.
Meanwhile, the George Lucas-produced Red Tails came in second with $19.1 million. Contraband, the Mark Wahlberg thriller, got third, and Stephen Daldry’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close fourth.
Overall, the movie industry saw a 30-percent boost over the weekend. This is pretty impressive, considering the weather in the Midwest and on the East Coast was pretty crummy. It will be interesting to see how things go with this week’s new releases, which include the Katherine Heigl comedy One for the Money, Liam Neeson’s The Grey, the thriller Man on a Ledge with Sam Worthington, and a cross-dressing Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs.
