‘Twilight’ to Return With Short Films on Facebook

Lionsgate is heralding the unexpected — and unusual — return of The Twilight Saga.

Instead of producing more feature-length movies starring Bella, Edward and Jacob, the studio is partnering with Twilight author Stephanie Meyer, Facebook, the nonprofit Women in Film organization and crowdsourcing platform Tongal to develop and produce a series of female-directed short films through a social media campaign called “The Storytellers — New Creative Voice of The Twilight Saga.”

Using Meyer’s The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide, at least five female filmmakers will create new short films starring characters from the series. A panel comprised of some of the most prominent women in the film industry will advise the filmmakers and, ultimately, narrow down the entries to the final five. The panel will include Meyer, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart, Academy Award winners Kate Winslet and Octavia Spencer, Frozen writer/director Jennifer Lee, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, Modern Family actress Julie Bowen, and Women in Film President Cathy Schulman.

Twilight fans will then help select the winner, who will get a cash prize and career opportunities in return. A press release states that fans will also be involved in the entire production process on both the Facebook and Tongal platforms.

“The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I’ve worked in the film industry,” Meyer said in a statement. “I’m honored to be working with Women In Film, Lionsgate, and Facebook on a project dedicated to giving more women a chance to be heard creatively.”
