Tribbles: They are a small, yet incredibly iconic part of the Star Trek mythos -- and it seems they'll play a role in Star Trek: Discovery, the latest incarnation of Gene Roddenberry's long-running science fiction franchise.

Speaking at a recent press event, Discovery executive producer Alex Kurtzman confirmed that the fan-favorite fur balls would be appearing on the show, saying "Yes, Tribbles, yes."

The fluffy non-intelligent creatures made their Trek debut in the original series episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" in 1967. In the story, the amiable aliens helped foil a Klingon plan to annex Sherman's Planet when they help reveal that Arne Darvin, a Federation functionary, is actually a Klingon in disguise.

Tribbles have also starred in the animated series episode "More Tribbles, More Troubles," the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine anniversary episode "Trials and Tribble-ations," and The Enterprise episode The Breach, in addition to making brief appearances in the 2009 movie Star Trek and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.
