Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon eclipsed its competition over the holiday weekend, raking in $116.4 million domestically and surpassing the $115.8 million earned in 2004 by Spider-Man 2 to become the best July 4 opening on record.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Paramount Pictures release grossed $398.1 million in its global six-day opening, making Dark of the Moon the third-best international launch of all time.

The third installment of the action franchise has brought in $181.1 million domestically since its premiere last Tuesday night, less than the $200.1 million earned by its predecessor, 2009's Revenge of the Fallen. Overseas, however, the $217 million grossed through Sunday overshadows the $129.6 million opening by the second film.

It will come as no surprise that 62 percent of ticket buyers were male; 55 percent were under the age of 25.

Warner Bros.' Green Lantern, meanwhile, dropped to No. 7 in its third weekend, grossing $8 million for a total domestic box office of $103.7 million.
