Fans have known for quite some time that Transformers: The Last Knight would mark a turning point for the franchise. Michael Bay has stated that the fifth installment would be his last entry in the franchise (at least in the core series), and it appears the director has pulled out every stop possible for the final trailer of his tenure.
Another changing of the guard might be happening in front of the camera as well, as it appears the fates of two worlds rest solely upon the shoulders of fan-favorite Bumblebee.
With Optimus Prime seemingly the film’s third act antagonist, it is no coincidence that Bumblebee headlines the final Last Knight trailer, but it is especially notable after last week’s news that casting is underway for the beloved Autobot’s spin-off. The producers are sparing no cent as they target True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld for a leading role in what would be the franchise’s first iteration outside of the primary series.
The official synopsis for Transformers: The Last Knight states:
The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).
There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.
Opening June 21, director Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight stars franchise veterans Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro, joined by newcomers Isabela Moner, Liam Garrigan, Jerrod Carmichael, Mitch Pileggi, Laura Haddock, Santago Cabrera and Anthony Hopkins.
