Martin Scorsese isn’t exactly a filmmaker we would typically associate with tapping into warm, fuzzy feelings or with the sort of magical realism you might see in a film adaptation of a children’s book. And yet that’s the direction he’s headed in with Hugo, based on Brian Selznick’s illustrated novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which we get our first look at today in a debut trailer.
What do you think? It’s definitely not your typical Scorsese, but it’s very pretty. We get a lot of looks at Sacha Baron Cohen and his pooch — they appear to be the main antagonists (or Cohen at least, since dogs aren’t really capable of villainy) and the briefest of glimpses at Ben Kingsley (who really does look a lot like Georges Melies). Don’t take my word for it; see for yourself right here.
The film, which opens Nov. 23, also stars Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Emily Mortimer and Michael Stuhlbarg.
