October is always a great time. For one thing, it’s fall, so pumpkin-flavored everything is everywhere and, more importantly, people are making all kinds of scary plans for Halloween. Before All Hallows’ Eve at the end of the month, however, New York Comic Con is going down next weekend. Between a slew of exclusives shown off by companies like Diamond Select Toys, Funko and Super 7 and horror collectibles from the likes of NECA and Vinyl Sugar, it’s a great time to peruse all the week’s collecting news!
DIAMOND SELECT TOYS NYCC EXCLUSIVES | Diamond Select Toys actually plan on giving away a good deal of items at this show in addition to selling a pair of exclusives. Giveaways include a translucent red Raphael Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Minimate as well as Minimate versions of movie posters from “Pulp Fiction,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Back to the Future II.” As far as things you can buy, the company will have limited supplies of the black and white Harley Quinn bust from “Batman: The Animated Series” as well a Nightmare Before Christmas Minimates deluxe box set featuring Lock, Shock, Barrel, Battle-Damaged Jack and the Bathtub!
FUNKO NYCC EXCLUSIVES | Last week we covered most of Funko’s NYCC exclusives, but there seem to always be a few more hiding. According to the company this is the final batch and it includes Pop Vinyls of Stan Lee, a Chrome TIE Fighter Pilot, “Penguins” star Rico and a 6-inch version of the Iron Throne.
The final batch is rounded out by a “T2” ReAction Frozen Patrolman T1000, a black, white and red Dorbz Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle 4-pack, a Hikari My Little Pony Glitter Color Storm Rainbow Dash and three T-shirts featuring Captain Phasma, Stan Lee and mascot Freddy Funko.
SUPER 7 NYCC EXCLUSIVES | Super 7 is modifying their play for NYCC after SDCC. This time around, instead of creating a full pop-up store you needed a special coin to enter, they will sell various items at their booth. Those items include the return of the retro M.O.T.U.S.C.L.E. mini 3-packs as well as black-and-white Mattel Star Wars-style figures of He-Man, Skeletor, Mer-Man and Beast Man as well as ghostly green Universal Monsters that have only been teased up until now!
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE | We haven’t seen too much of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman as she will appear in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” so this newly revealed DC Collectibles statue definitely gives us a lot to look at. Set in a somewhat similar position to the poster that revealed the hero’s look, this piece stands a foot tall and will ship battle ready around the time of the film’s debut next March.
DC SUPER HERO GIRLS | After a long wait, we finally got our first look at what DC, Warner Bros. and Mattel have planned for their DC Super Hero Girls initiative. The toy side of the roll out will include 6- and 12-inch action dolls feature the characters who all go to high school together. The first examples include Harley Quinn and Bumblebee in the former size along with Wonder Woman and Supergirl in the latter. More information will be released at NYCC.
DIAMOND SELECT TOYS | Even with NYCC so close, DST took the time to reveal what they’ll be selling in 2016. New items include the Deadpool Marvel Retro Cloth figure (which comes with multiple costumes) as well as new items based on “Batman: The Animated Series” like the Catwoman bust and Femme Fatales statue as well as the Robin bank. Counselor Troi of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” will also join the Femme Fatales line.
Other new items include the “Nightmare Before Christmas” Pajama Jack Coffin Doll, Jay and Silent Bob Bobble Heads, a glow-in-the-dark Cthulhu bank, a Mechagodzilla pizza cutter and Slimer bottle opener.
SUPERMAN: RED SON | No matter the situation or the reality, Batman always knows how to dress. When he’s taking part in an Elseworlds tale about Superman being raised in Russia, he understandably wears warmer clothes. Sideshow Collectibles’ line of statues based on the Mark Millar-written miniseries adds the Dark Knight next fall in the form of this 22.5-inch statue.
DORBZ | With the weather turning along with the pages of the calendar, it’s undeniably fall outside. That means that Halloween is not far off which always translates into lots of fun horror-themed toys. Vinyl Sugar took that to heart by coming up with the Horror Dorbz that will hit this month. The first wave includes Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Jason Voorhees and Pinhead.
December will then see the release of some figures who have very different feelings on the supernatural: the Ghostbusters! Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore and Peter Venkman all join the tiny, adorable crowd in time for the Holiday season.
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET | In other Halloween related news, NECA surprised many a Toys “R” Us shopper recently when they sneaked an NES-inspired 8-inch Retro Freddy Krueger figure into stores. This one comes designed to look like he hopped right out of the 1990 “A Nightmare on Elm Street” Nintendo game to go along with last year’s similarly themed Jason Voorhees figure.
POP VINYL | Funko also showed off some non-exclusive toys this week, all of the Pop Vinyl variety. Right now you can go out and buy some “The Hunger Games” entrants including Katniss Everdeen, Girl On Fire Katniss, Peeta Mellark, Effie Trinket and President Snow. If that’s not enough Katniss in your life, Wedding Dress and Mockingjay versions hit this month.
Then, in November a few Disney and Pixar-based collectibles will hit including Arlo and Spot from next month’s “The Good Dinsosaur.” “Big Hero Six” star Baymax will also become a Pop Keychain that month in Nursebot and Armored versions.
