Hopefully everyone out there in Toy Land had a happy holiday, and we doubly hope you received some cool action figures, replicas, statues and other geekery in the process. After taking a few weeks off, the latest TOYING AROUND is fit to burst with all kinds of news, from the resurrection of the classic Power Lords toys and new He-Man statues, to teases of “Iron Man 3” figures to come plus much, much more!
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE | Mattel is looking for partners in crime when it comes to He-Man collectibles. The toy giant announced a deal with Pop Culture Shock Collectibles to make 1:4 scale statues based on the Masters of the Universe franchise. The first piece will be available for pre-order in February. Though it hasn’t been announced yet, we’re guessing it’s a certain fella sporting a big sword and furry underwear.
POWER LORDS | Renowned toy makers The Four Horsemen — best known as the sculptors behind Mattel’s 6-inch DC figures — had a big announcement at the end of the year: they’re making new Power Lords figures. The 80s toy line from Revell was designed by sci-fi artist Wayne Douglas Barlowe. The Horsemen have tapped Barlowe as a creative consultant on the new figures. Keep an eye on PowerLordsReturn.com for updates.
DJANGO UNCHAINED | Remember the good old days when toy companies would make action figures for children based on wildly inappropriate movies like “Terminator” or “Rambo?” Well those days are long gone and figures along those lines are made by companies like NECA for grown-up collectors. Take this new line of figures based on Quentin Tarantino’s latest hit, “Django Unchained” which is available right now. The first series of 8-inch MEGO-style figures includes Django (Jamie Foxx), Schultz (Christoph Waltz), Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) and Butch (James Remar). Get them all and recreate the bloody brilliance of the film at home!
DC COMICS | Kotobukiya continues to roll out wildly accurate statues based on DC Comics’ New 52 characters. 2013 will see the debut of Justice League members Wonder Woman and Cyborg in all their heroic glory. Wonder Woman will stand 7.5 inches tall while Cyborg measures in at 8.5 inches. With these two pieces — coming out next spring — the full JL line-up will be complete and ready to assemble in one place.
G.I. JOE: RETALIATION | Hot Toys made G.I. Joe fans all twitterpated last week when they showed off their upcoming Snake Eyes figure based on the upcoming film “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Like all their figures, this one comes packed with points of articulation, weapons and spare limbs. As if that wasn’t enough, they also announced that there are also figures of Joe Colton (Bruce Willis), Roadblock (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee) in the works.
IRON MAN | Of course, Hot Toys has plenty of other movie figures in the works for the new year, including several set in the Marvel Studios Universe. First up, you can pick up the Hall of Armor Diorama that comes with LED lights and schematic stickers for all available and future Hot Toys Iron Man figures. The pieces come sold as singles and packs of four or seven. They also showed off a teaser image of a piece based on the armor seen in “Iron Man 3.” That’s a pretty great looking chest plate!
IRON MAN | As we inch closer to the May 3 release of the first post-“Avengers” Marvel Studios film, expect to see tons of “Iron Man 3” merch on shelves. Diamond Select Toys is getting in on the game too, but they’re being sneaky about it. They will be adding film-based figures of Iron Man and Iron Patriot to the 7-inch scale Marvel Select line, as well as a full assortment of MiniMates this spring. The ‘Mates 2-packs include Mandarin with Iron Man, Iron Patriot with a secret figure, War Machine with Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall), Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) with Cowboy Tony Stark and two more to be revealed later on.
DOCTOR WHO | Have an extra $3500 lying around? Then, boy, does QMx have a sonic screwdriver replica for you! The ultra authentic River Song Sonic Screwdriver is part of their Artisan Master Series and was hand made by “Doctor Who” prop maker Nick Robatto. The piece comes in a replica of River’s TARDIS journal and is limited to a mere 15 pieces. (via Doctor Who Collectibles)
LORD OF THE RINGS | As “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” continues to make huge bank in theaters, interest in J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters is on the rise again. To capitalize on this, Weta — the company that not only handles all the special effects for Peter Jackson’s “LOTR” and “Hobbit” films, but also produces collectible versions for purchase — has a 5.5 x 7.5 inch statue called Fellowship of the Ring Part 1 featuring Gandalf, Frodo and Legolas. There will be two more pieces that will all join together for one giant statue.
DEAD SPACE | Isaac Clarke might have started out as a simple engineer in 2008’s “Dead Space,” but now he’s a world-class alien killer gearing up for his third game in February. Kotobukiya based their upcoming ARTFX statue on the character as he appears in that game which comes out Feb. 5. The piece features LED lights in the helmet, glove and backpack, a ball-jointed neck and stands on a snowy Tau Volantis base over a dead Necromorph. The piece is a foot and a half tall and will be out in June.
GAME OF THRONES | Are you a fan of well adapted, seriously portrayed fantasy and incredibly uncomfortable looking furniture? Then the “Game of Thrones” Iron Throne from Dark Horse is just the collectible for you! On Jan. 23 you can pick up the 14-inch version, but if you’re looking for something a little smaller, a 7-inch throne will be available on Feb. 13 — both replicas arrive in time for the third season premiere on March 31.
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES | Tom Hardy’s Bane proved to be one of Batman’s more devious foes in last year’s blockbuster smash “The Dark Knight Rises.” His figure from Hot Toys looks to be a hit as well. As you can see in the photo, the 12-inch tall figure comes decked out in the long coat seen in the film as well as the vest, face mask and Bat-breaking arms. Only one thing could make this better: a built in program that translates everything you say into Bane-speak!
VIDEO GAME GUNS | NECA and video games have been going steady for a while now, so it should come as no surprise the company is killing it when it comes to replica weapons from some of the most popular games around. You can already get your hands on the Portal Device from “Portal,” but that’s not all. The Sky-Hook from the March 26-debuting “BioShock Infinite” has started hitting shelves in various outlets while the company is showing off preview images of the light-up Gravity Gun made famous in the “Half-Life” games. That piece will be out in the spring with more info coming soon.
G.I. JOE | Sure people are getting all amped up about “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” (again), but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of love for the old school G.I. Joe characters and designs. Sideshow Collectibles celebrates just that with this 22.5-inch tall statue of everyone’s favorite raven haired femme fatale, The Baroness. The statue from Sideshow’s Premium Format Figure line comes ready to do some serious damage and will only be available through authorized retailers. The piece ships in July.
