Get ready gang because there’s a lot of collectible goodness coming at you this week. Several new Marvel Studios action figures based on “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Captain America: The Winter Solider” and “The Avengers” debuted along with a whole slate of DC Collectibles offerings. In addition to all that, “Adventure Time” and Funko take a new look at the blind box format, Jay and Silent Bob score new figures and a relative newcomer shows off some decidedly old school comic figure offerings.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY | People are stoked for Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Film-based toys made quite a splash at Toy Fair and now Diamond Select Toys has officially joined in on the fun by showing off their upcoming line of MiniMates over on Marvel.com. 2-packs include Star-Lord and Ronan the Accuser, Drax and Groot, Gamora and Nova Corps Centurion as well as Nebula and Sakaaran Trooper. Each figure comes with accessories, including a tiny Rocket Raccoon for Groot. The figures will hit stores in advance of the film’s August 1 release.
DC COLLECTIBLES | It’s solicitations time, which means we get lots of new toys and statues to look at, especially from the always productive DC Collectibles. Many of the most recent figures were shown off by the company going into Toy Fair, but there were still some new pieces to drool over like the 11.25-inch-tall “Sandman: Overture” statue in both regular and bronze editions. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn scored a bust in the DC Super-Villains line while Mr. Freeze’s “Batman: Arkham City” look will get a nearly foot-tall statue.
Finally, two new waves of Scribblenauts Unmasked Minis premiered. Series 3 will include Alloy, Gold Wonder Woman, Sinestro Corps Sinestro, Green Lantern Simon Baz, Legion villain Tharok, Batman in his grays and blues, Professor Zoom (or is that Reverse Flash?), Star-Spangled Kid, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and a pair of mystery figures. Meanwhile, the fourth series features Gold Cyborg, Mercury, Lex Luthor in his battle armor, Swamp Thing, Deathstroke, Mr. Miracle, John Constantine, Catwoman, Beast Boy and a few mysteries for good measure.
THE AVENGERS | Captain America’s survived more than his share of epic battles. He might take a few licks, but he always walks away victorious. Heck, he even beat supposed death! NECA captured the post-battle look of the character as seen in “The Avengers” with their June-shipping 18-inch Battle-Damaged Captain America figure, now with maskless face showing off Chris Evans’ familiar mug.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLIDER | Cap’s next big screen battle hits theaters on April 4 when “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” debuts. In the new film, Cap will wear a few different costumes including this one immortalized in toy form thanks to Hot Toys. Dubbed the “Golden Age” suit, this version of the 1/6 scale movie figure will only be “available exclusively during upcoming promotion events period in different countries,” according to their Facebook page. Further details will pop up there if you’re looking to get your hands on this one.
CATWOMAN | Gotham’s number one cat burglar gets another quality show of statue love thanks to Sideshow Collectibles. This week, they unveiled their November-debuting Catwoman Premium Format Figure. The 23-inch-tall, jumpsuit-sporting piece comes with a feline-adorned base, whip and two different heads. As usual, there’s a Sideshow exclusive version that comes with an extra right hand holding a bag of gems, which we’re sure she paid a fair price for.
ADVENTURE TIME | Funko’s taking this whole blind box thing to the next level with their Adventure Time Mystery Minis. Not only do you score a surprise figure when you purchase one of these toys, but you also get a tin featuring one of the many characters from the Land of Ooo. The mystery figures themselves include variations on Finn and Jake, Lumpy Space Princess, Fionna and Cake, Marceline, BMO, the Ice King and his trusty penguin Gunther. Cases hit in May.
PACIFIC RIM | Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” might have already made its mark at the box office and on home video, but the toys just keep on coming thanks to NECA. The most recently unveiled figure in the ongoing line of Kaijus is none other than Scunner, one of the largest beasts faced at the very end of the film. The bullish, multi-armed monster hits stores this summer.
JAY AND SILENT BOB | At this year’s Toy Fair, Diamond Select Toys showcased a number of new Kevin Smith-based collectibles including a line of MiniMates and Retro Bluntman and Chronic toys. Additionally, a “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” figure 2-pack was on display that wasn’t ready for public consumption just yet. This week, Action Figure Insider unveiled the figures which stand 7-inches tall, feature different heads and come with bases that recreate RST Video which was first seen in 1994’s “Clerks.”
SAILOR MOON | After kicking off a line of Sailor Moon action figures, Figurarts and Bluefin Tamashii Nations segued into the world of Sailor statues in their ZERO line. After Moon herself, the second entry will be her pal Sailor Mercury in all her water manipulating glory. The statue will ship in August or September this year.
AMAZING HEROES | In advance of their upcoming Kickstarter campaign, Fresh Monkey previewed one figure from their first wave of Amazing Heroes action figures in a 4.5 inch scale. You can clearly see classic comic character Black Terror, but there are three still-silhouetted figures to come. Who do you think will round out series one?
TRANSFORMERS | Finally, in toy-related cartoon news, Hasbro and The Hub announced a new Transformers series set to debut next year. This one takes place after the events of the recently completed Transformers: Prime, feature Bumblebee leading a new batch of bots and the voice talents of Will Friedle and Darren Criss.
