You might think Diamond Select Toys wouldn’t have had much to show off at New York Toy Fair this year given that, in consecutive weeks, the company had been busy revealing art and product information in the weeks leading to the annual, event. However, as we learned at the show, that was far from the case.
Even after revealing a ton of product online, DST still came to the Big Apple strong, with a booth full of new products, as well as better looks at ones we’d seen in earlier forms.
One of the big unveilings for the event came in the form of Minimate 2-pack of Liv and Blaine from the comic-based CW show “iZombie.” Fox’s “Gotham” also got some love, with new Select figures of Bruce Wayne, Victor Zsasz and Barbara Kean on the way, as well as a third Minimates box set.
DST also gave attendees a look at “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” Minimates based on the two Netflix series. The former set includes the title character, Foggy Nelson, Kingpin and Claire Temple, while the latter features Jessica, Luke Cage, Kilgrave and Trish Walker. In addition to two new sets of Greatest Hits 2-packs arriving later in the year, there will also be a “Giant Size X-Men” #1 assortment, the “Captain America: Civil War” ones previously seen and an additional one that includes Man-Thing, two different armored Spider-Mans, Nighthawk, Iron Man, animated Luke Cage from “Ultimate Spider-Man” and others.
If you prefer your Minimates to take inspiration from aliens or reptiles, then the Alien and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lines won’t disappoint. Both will continue on through this year with new 2-packs, as well as, in the case of Aliens, an APC vehicle that comes with Lt. Gorman for the humans to ride around in, keeping them perfectly safe from the xenomoprhs. The Predator and Back to the Future lines will also grow to include more characters from the films.
Though reaction to ABC’s “The Muppets” has been mixed, fans of the wacky performers all seem to enjoy DST’s Select and Minimate presentations of the characters. The Muppet Select packages will include a Statler and Waldorf 2-pack that comes with their infamous box seats, Animal is packed with his drum kit, and scientific genius Bunsen will, of course, be accompanied by Beaker. Meanwhile, the second line of Minimates will feature Statler, Waldorf, Reporter Kermit, Rowlf, Dr. Teeth, Animal, Mahna Mahna and Crazy Harry.
Other figures on display included the modern “X-Files” pairing of Mulder and Scully as Selects, Star Trek Select Khan, the Star Trek 50th Anniversary Minimate assortment and a mix of “Nightmare Before Christmas” cloth dolls, ‘Mates, Select and vinyl statues!
Finally, Kevin Smith fans will be happy to hear that the director’s characters will continue to be represented in Select and Minimate form. Jay, Silent Bob and Brodie, from “Mallrats,” will enter the larger scale as well as the smaller, along with Rene. If Quentin Tarantino is more your speed, note that this year will hopefully see the release of figures based on “Kill Bill” and “Pulp Fiction.” They were on display and looked amazing, but were not available for photography.
