It's been 31 years since Tom Cruise' Maverick flew into the hearts and skies of America -- and he's set to fly again. Paramount announced today via Deadline that Top Gun 2 will debut July 12, 2019.

Joseph Kosinski will direct the film -- Kosinski previously worked on Tron: Legacy and the sci-fi film Oblivion, which also starred Tom Cruise.

Cruise is officially on board to reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and while he may have been a young lieutenant in the original Top Gun movie, Maverick is now an instructor in the Top Gun program.

Thor and upcoming Booster Gold writer Zack Stentz is set to pen the script, alongside Hunger Games Mockingjay writer Peter Craig, Jungle Book writer Justin Marks and X-Men: First Class writer Ashley Miller. Original executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also set to return.

While rumors of a Top Gun sequel had been making the rounds for years, this is the first official confirmation since Cruise's comments a few weeks ago. So far no additional casting announcements have been made, but original cast member (and previous Batman Forever actor) Val Kilmer has expressed excitement about potentially returning.

Top Gun 2 will bow July 12, 2019.
