Here is an archive of all the past top five lists I've one over the years.

For two years in the late 1970s, Marvel licensed the use of Godzilla for a comic book series. It was very popular, but soon became SO popular that Toho asked for a large license increase after the first year and an even larger increase after the second year and it just no longer made sense for Marvel fiscally, so they ended the series after 24 issues. For the most part, writer Doug Moench invented brand-new monsters for Godzilla to fight (as Toho required separate licensing fees for any of their other monsters) but throughout the series, SHIELD agents Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones and Jimmy Woo pursued the monster and on occasion Godzilla faced off against Marvel heroes (including one created for the series). Here, then, are the five best fights between Marvel heroes and Godzilla!

5. The Champions vs. Godzilla (Godzilla #3 by Doug Moench, Herb Trimpe and Tony DeZuniga)

I am surprised that the Champions didn't just disband as soon as this fight was over, that's how poorly they did against Godzilla.

First, let's see the Champions at their base...

Woah, woah, Black Widow, I wanted to know what Darkstar was doing! Was she doing her vaudeville routine? Doing her Yakov Smirnoff-inspired comedy act? I need to know!!

Man, even their Champscraft is awful (and what a terrible name for their vehicle, too)...

What's interesting is that that style of no roof flying craft was the standard type of vehicle for a while there in the Marvel Universe. Even the first Quinjet was like that. I guess that they were all based on the original Fantasticar.

The Champions were such an awful team that as soon as they arrive, they're already being jerks to each other...

Iceman, buddy, trust me, no one else gives a crap that you and Angel have been teammates before.

The Champions did have ONE notable moment in the battle, when Hercules impressively flips Godzilla...

Of course, Godzilla gets right back up, but hey, Hercules DID at least knock him down.

Godzilla then destroys much of the Golden Gate Bridge (there's a great point where, I shit you not, Blsck Widow yells to Hercules, "The Champscraft! It's still on the bridge! Let's save THAT at least!" Yes, Widow is already basically just calling it a loss and wants to at least not lose her shit).

I love this fight between Dugan and the Champions...

YOU FORGOT ABOUT THE GIANT MONSTER?!? Also, Angel shouldn't talk so soon, as the Coup de grâce is about to come...

Yes, so not only did they not stop Godzilla, not only did they not stop Godzilla from destroying the Golden Gate Bridge, but Hercules flat out crashes a helicarrier! And this was back when crashing a helicarrier MEANT something!

4. The Fantastic Four vs. Mini-Godzilla (Godzilla #20-21 by Doug Moench, Herb Trimpe and Dan Green)

In the previous issue, Hank Pym had used Pym Particles to shrink Godzilla down to size. He still escaped, though, of course, and he found his way to a museum where the Fantastic Four got involved in the fight....

You have to love Ben's umbrage. Not even a blamed Japanese dionsaur, indeed.

The reason this fight is low on the list is because it is just mini-Godzilla.

Sue tries to contain Godzilla but can't pull it off. So Godzilla races away further into the museum and it ends up, of course, in a big shark tank...

The fight continues to the next issue and is resolved very quickly...

Reed uses Dr. Doom's Time Machine to send Godzilla back in time to the age of dinosaurs. That sets up one of the later fights on this list!

3. Red Ronin vs. Godzilla (Godzilla #8 by Doug Moench, Herb Trimpe and Fred Kida)

The first few issues of Godzilla were leading to the creation of Red Ronin, a giant robot just like the popular giant robot Gigantor as well as the Shogun Warriors toyline (Red Ronin is essentially a Shogun Warrior). The robot was designed by this guy whose grandson was all, like, "No way, Godzilla's cool! Don't kill him!" and accidentally ends up stealing the robot and his brain is imprinted on the cybernetic controls, so only this little kid Rob could use the giant robot. In Godzilla #8, the robot is finally put into action against Godzilla and Rob initially tries not to fight...

but soon he is right there with Godzilla and tries to transport him away from the city (Godzilla was terrorizing San Diego) but Godzilla breaks free, leading to the coolest sequence in the book...

What an awesome splash page!

However, Rob still feels he can redeem Godzilla, so when SHIELD attacks, he tries to defend Godzilla and has a momentary breakthrough...

A few issues later, Red Ronin and Godzilla have a sort of team-up against a giant monster in the Grand Canyon. That's cool, too, but since it was really a team-up, I don't have it on the list.

The top two are on the next page!

2. Devil Dinosaur vs. Godzilla (Godzilla #21 by Doug Moench, Herb Trimpe and Dan Green)

As mentioned before, Reed sent Godzilla back in time. Godzilla was thrilled to be back in the age of dinosaurs, even when some jerk dinosaurs attacked him. However, it looked to outsiders like GODZILLA was being the jerk, so it led to the protector of the area stepping in - Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur, making their official Marvel Universe debut (their Jack Kirby series was not necessarily in continuity)...

The little boy that Godzilla is seeing is the Red Ronin pilot who likes Godzilla, not, as you might imagine, Godzilla's lover.

1. The Avengers and the Fantastic Four vs. Godzilla (Godzilla #23-24 by Doug Moench, Herb Trimpe, Jack Abel and Dan Green)

So at the end of Godzilla #22, Godzilla returns to the present but now he is REGULAR SIZE! Uh oh!!

The Avengers get into the game, but first they have to stop playing a DIFFERENT game - MONOPOLY!

The Avengers have some various fights against Godzilla...

Godzilla escapes and begins to climb the Empire State Building, causing Thor to have to try to balance it...

and then everyone lets loose in an epic double-page spread...

Finally, young Rob convinces Godzilla to just leave for good...
