The "Tomb Raider" franchise is venerable in the video game world, having had 16 or so entries released since it debuted in 1996. The two Angelina Jolie-fronted movies still have their supporters, and did respectably enough in the box office upon their release. Most fans agree though, the series was taken to the next level with the 2013 video game reboot, simply called "Tomb Raider," which not only was an eminently playable game, it was filled was memorable characters, setpieces, and the most compelling version of Lara Croft to date. Fans of the franchise will be pleased to hear, then, that the new film is taking cues from these new games.

In an interview with HeyUGuys (who accurately describe star Alicia Vikander as an "Oscar winning actor and all-round lovely lady"), Producer Graham King discussed where the film is drawing its inspiration. “This is kind of what we call a ‘back to the roots story,’" King stated. "This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and i think we’ve got the right crew and a great director and I think it’s going to be really fun making a film like this”.

Lara Croft’s last cinematic adaptation was 2003’s “Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life,” the second outing for original star Angelina Jolie. Dark Horse Comics is currently publishing an ongoing “Tomb Raider” comic book series from writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Phillip Sevy which also follows the game’s rebooted continuity.

“Tomb Raider” will hit theaters March 16, 2018.
