Comics fans in the Northeast United States who aren’t heading to Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo or Wizard World’s Toronto convention this weekend might considering driving (or riding the Amtrak) to Philadelphia for this event: An evening with artist J.G. Jones and writer John Arcudi at Locust Moon Comics.
The event will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the nearly one-year-old store, located at 4040 Locust St., near the University of Pennsylvania campus. Check out the press release after the break.
AN EVENING WITH J.G. JONES AND JOHN ARCUDI AT LOCUST MOON COMICS
Acclaimed comic creators J.G. Jones and John Arcudi will be signing books at West Philadelphia’s LOCUST MOON COMICS on Friday, March 18 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Jones is the co-creator and artist of the hit comic book and major motion picture WANTED, and Arcudi is the writer of the sensational graphic novel A GOD SOMEWHERE.
Jones is one of the most sought-after artists in the comic book industry. His work, characterized by a classic pulp elegance combined with a modern graphic flair, has earned Eisner award nods for the best-selling, genre-bending WANTED and his stunning series of covers for DC Comics’ groundbreaking weekly series 52. Most recently, he was the primary artist on Grant Morrison’s definitive FINAL CRISIS epic. Jones is currently working on a five issue miniseries starring, appropriately enough, Doc Savage, the first pulp hero.
John Arcudi, a mainstay of the comics industry, is one of the architects of the HELLBOY line of books from Dark Horse Comics, being the primary writer of B.P.R.D. His early career included work writing for such titles as DARK HORSE PRESENTS, DOOM PATROL, and THUNDERBOLTS for Dark Horse, DC and Marvel before releasing his original graphic novel A GOD SOMEWHERE to rapturous critical praise in 2010. Described by HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola as “the most human take on the superhero story I have ever seen,” Arcudi’s opus, which explores the troubling implications of of superhumans in a realistic social setting, is taking the world of graphic fiction by storm.
Locust Moon Comics is a retailer, art gallery and small press located in West Philadelphia. Since opening their doors in April, they have become a hub of the local comics & art community, hosting many readings, signings and book release parties with a diverse cross-section of artists and creators including Farel Dalrymple, Bob Schreck, Steve Walker, Box Brown, James Comey, the XION group and the Philly Comix Jam. The store features a deep and diverse collection of comics and graphic novels with a special emphasis on independent and creator-owned work, as well as high-quality art prints, imported and limited-edition toys, and a vast selection of rare and out-of-print DVDs.
More than a comic shop, Locust Moon is quickly becoming an epicenter for vital, rising voices in the rapidly developing world of graphic fiction and sequential art. Co-owners Joshua O’Neill and Chris Stevens are themselves comic creators and writers, and the gallery-style walls of their store are adorned with their own works-in-progress, illustrated by such celebrated talents as Jae Lee, Arthur Adams, Farel Dalrymple, G.B. Tran and Senk Chhour. In addition to their diverse slate of events which includes movie screenings, costume parties and concerts, Locust Moon hosts monthly “Drink & Draw” evenings that have become mainstays of the local comics world, cross-pollinating an astonishing variety of voices from the rich and fertile Philadelphia creative community, from mainstream and independent artists to sculptors, animators, puppet-makers, illustrators, print-makers, writers and publishers.
