Timecop is going back to the future! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures is working on a new film revolving around the concept of police officers traveling through time to track down chronology-hopping bad guys.
Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, the original 1994 sci-fi thriller was based on a Dark Horse Presents serial co-written by Dark Horse founder Mike Richardson. Directed by Peter Hyams from a script by Mark Verheiden, the movie grossed $102 million worldwide off of a $27 million budget, making it Van Damme’s most successful feature.
Universal’ is hoping to tap into some of that success again by returning to the concept that spawned a short-lived TV series, a Super Nintendo video game, novels, a comic adaptation of the film and a straight-to-DVD sequel with a different cast.
The studio’s Global Produce banner has yet to announce a writer or director, but the film is being produced by Marc Shmuger (We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks) and Tom McNulty (The Rocker, Date Night).
