"Thor: The Dark World"

A week before its North American debut, "Thor: The Dark World" opened to more than $109 million in 36 countries this weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel to 2011's "Thor" opened notably ahead of its predecessor in many territories, and scored one of the top openings of the year so far. The trade also notes that the film's take so far pushed Disney past the $2.3 billion mark in foreign grosses for the year, setting a new record for the studio.

The latest film from Marvel Studios once again brings together Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston as Asgard's dysfunctional family, who team up to fight the dark elf Malekith, played by Christopher Eccleston. "Thor: The Dark World" also stars Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, Zachary Levi, Ray Stevenson and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Marvel Studios' "Thor: The Dark World" hits theaters in North America on Nov. 8.
