Remember all those old Pokemon cards you had as a kid? Maybe since then, you’ve seen a few articles pop up here and there about how some of them have become incredibly valuable. Maybe even a parent or family member has off-handedly mentioned how they bet the cards you may or may not have saved could have been worth thousands, only for you brush them off? Well, maybe they were right, as one of the world’s most valuable Pokemon cards recently sold for a price you will not believe.

Heritage Auctions, a Beverley Hills-based auction house, just recently posted an auction of a very rare (and apparently very valuable) Pokemon card. The chances of you having it in your collection are slim, but -- if you do -- then you can sell it for nearly $54,000.

“The Pikachu Illustrator Card was given in January of 1998 to winners of the CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest,” said Barry Sandoval, Director of Operations for Comics at Heritage Auctions. “Only 20-39 copies of this card were released, 10 of which are graded in top condition and it is unknown how many still remain with the public.”

The card is a “Pikachu Illustrator Card,” was released in 1998 and given to the winners of an Illustration Contest. The fact that fewer than 40 cards exist in the entire world (only 10 of which are documented as being in “top condition”) makes it one of the rarest cards, which is likely the reason for its huge price. While the normal collector may not have it lying around, who knows what could have happened to the other missing 29? Time to start scouting garage sales!
