Last night, "The X-Files" returned to television screens after 14 years off the air. The show's highly anticipated and highly publicized return debuted in all time zones Sunday night after the NFC Championship football game -- and it looks like the hype paid off.

According to The Wrap, "The X-Files" premiere episode brought in an estimated 13.5 million viewers in overnight ratings. The premiere also scored a 5.1 rating in the key adult demo (18-49.) In time age when NBC's "The Voice" and cable dramas like AMC's "The Walking Dead" are pulling in huge numbers and network genre shows are not, this is promising news for fans of "The X-Files."

"The X-Files" revival is set to run for six episodes, but if the series keeps pulling in huge ratings like this, Fox could greenlight more. Series creator Chris Carter told SPINOFF last week that he thinks the show has "a lot of life left in it": "There are a lot of 'X-Files' story to tell."

"The X-Files" returns tonight on Fox at 8 p.m., and will continue to air on Monday nights for the duration of the season.
