In this feature, I examine comic book fights that were particularly notable in the wrong side winning (or at least that the fight wasn't won the "right" way). This really isn't a big deal, of course, as it doesn't really matter if the "wrong" person won a fight. But it's fun to talk about!

It's funny, this one is currently my second-most requested fight, but I was never all that interested in featuring it. However, after I spotlighted it in this week's Comic Book Legends Revealed, I figured I might as well get it over with!

As always, the first page spotlights their power levels and the second page examines the fight itself.

And as always, the first question we need to ask is...

How did these people do when they fought Spider-Man?

Besides destroying the X-Men during Secret Wars, I don't think Spider-Man has had a lot of experience fighting Storm in the regular Marvel Universe.

Oddly enough, he DID sort of fight Wonder Woman in Superman and Spider-Man (the second one, by Jim Shooter, John Buscema, Joe Sinnott, Terry Austin and Klaus Janson)...

See, even Spider-Man knows he WOULD have won the fight had it gone done.

Here's a quick power check. Storm's lightning bolts are badass. Watch her take down a helicarrier in Uncanny X-Men #21 (by Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo)....

Wonder Woman, though, took on a crazed Superman in Sacrifice and held her own pretty well. She pushed his heat vision BACK!

And then did well otherwise later in the fight...

That's my thing with Wonder Woman. Since the 1970s, she's been seen as roughly on par with Superman, so she strikes me as probably a bit too strong for Storm. But let's see the fight (which has another annoying aspect to it)...

Go to the next page for the fight!

So the fight in DC v. Marvel #3 (by Ron Marz, Dan Jurgens and Joe Rubinstein) already opens with something I have a problem with, as Wonder Woman has Thor's hammer and just decides to give it away...

Huh? She's fighting Storm for the fate of her WORLD. Seems kind of odd to turn down a sizable advantage like that.

So already, I have a problem with the fight just for that. But then the fight itself. Now you must note that they were EXTREMELY limited in space here and Marz had to write something that could easily be flipped to Wonder Woman winning if the fans had voted for her, so we were basically heading for one of two endings here - Storm blasts her a couple of times and wins or Storm blasts her a couple of times but then Wonder Woman stays up and knocks Storm out. The first one happened in the comic...

And I think given their respective strengths, it should have been the former. Two blasts from Storm and then Wonder Woman is out? Someone who took on Superman head-to-head a few different times? That just doesn't follow. I suppose I could buy a long, dragged out fight where Storm blasts her, like, repeatedly over and over - even there I am a bit iffy on it, but I could sort of buy it. Two blasts and it's over, though? And Wonder Woman not getting in a shot on Storm (which would end the fight right away due to her strength)? I don't think I buy that, either.

I really don't mind Storm winning in the abstract, though, which is why I've avoided this fight. It was the HOW that I have a problem with. This is with all due respect to Ron Marz having to write these things under EXTREMELY limited circumstances. Three pages for a fight like this? That's nuts! I really feel for the guy. Especially since he also had to make sure the last page was switchable. That's a really high level of writing difficulty. So I don't blame him for this being too short of a fight.
