The Wolverine will be the first X-Men movie to be released in 3D.
The news comes via Russian website Stark Industries, which tweeted, “Fox Russia confirmed THE WOLVERINE will be in 3D.”
This isn’t the first we’ve heard of The Wolverine getting the 3D treatment. In April, then-Fox CEO Tom Rothman told MTV the decision hadn’t been made yet, suggesting it was indeed a possibility. The Wolverine didn’t end up shooting in 3D, so this news means it will receive the post-conversion treatment.
With The Wolverine being released in 3D, we wonder if this is going to be a new push for Fox superhero movies going forward. The Avengers met with a lot of success in the format earlier this year, and 3D is an easy way to ensure a boost in box-office sales, so maybe X-Men: Days of Future Past will also be post-converted — or maybe even shot in 3D.
Directed by James Mangold, The Wolverine is based in part on the 1982 Wolverine miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, which found Logan battling ninjas and the politics of the Tokyo criminal underworld for the heart of his ex-lover, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord. Jackman is joined by Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee. The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.
