SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for tonight’s episode of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” as well as the Image Comics series.
Two weeks ago, we speculated that AMC’s “The Walking Dead” was about to plunge into the events of issue #105, where Carl infiltrates The Sanctuary in his attempts to assassinate Negan. Like most things in “The Walking Dead,” it doesn’t go according to plan, and Carl finds himself being mentored by the very man he sought out to kill.
The events of tonight’s episode, “Sing Me a Song” unfold almost exactly like they do in the comic, with Negan expressing genuine admiration for Carl. Still, the guy’s an unpredictable sadist, meaning that Carl sees just as much cruelty as he does kindness from the leader of The Saviors. The most graphic moment comes when Negan discovers one of his wives, Amber, has been reconnecting with her ex-lover, Mark. Under Negan’s rules, women have the choice to join his harem in exchange for a better lifestyle, but under the condition that they remain devoted to him and him only.
When Amber breaks this rule, that means a hot iron to the face of Mark — the same fate that befell Dwight not too long ago. The show recreates the scene from the comic in all its gory unease. After Dwight fetches the iron from a fire, Negan presses it to Mark’s left cheek and temple. Just like on the page, there’s a string of melted flesh that peels from his face as Negan removes the iron and Mark passes out. It’s unnerving, to say the least, and another example of the show being especially chilling when it sticks to its source material — such as the fate that Glenn met in the season premiere.
Read about the other notable scenes from the comic in our full recap and review later tonight.
