Cullen Bunn Co-Writing New Tick Comic Series

New England Comics will see an old mainstay return to the printed page when a new “The Tick” comic launches in June. The series will be co-written by Cullen Bunn (“X-Men Gold”) and Jimmy Z. Johnston — who worked together on IDW Publishing’s “Micronauts” — with art by Douglas Paszkiewicz (“Arsenic Lullaby”).

The comic store and publisher took to Twitter to share the news, along with a look at the cover to “The Tick” #1. The news of a new Tick series follows on the heels of Amazon revealing a release date for a new live-action series based on the hero.

The solicitation for the series (via Bleeding Cool) reads:

Amazon is bringing The Tick back to TV this summer! And NEC is bringing The Tick back to comics in August with an all-new continuing color series! Written by Cullen Bunn (DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, X-MEN BLUE, & HARROW COUNTY) and drawn by Douglas (Arsenic Lullaby) Paszkiewicz. The Tick and Arthur confront the dire menaces of ninjas and murder clowns, while also flashing back to blasts from The Tick’s here-to-for unexplored past! Join us for fun as Bunn imprints The Tick with his own creative style of story-telling! 32pg, FC, $3.99

“The Tick” is the latest adaptation of the character created by cartoonist Ben Edlund in 1986 to advertise the New England Comics chain. The character would find popularity later when he went on to star in his own line of independent comics in 1988 and, in 1994, as the star of an animated series on Fox. Fox also attempted to adapt the character into a live-action show in 2001, but the series was short-lived, airing for only nine episodes before it was cancelled.
