Jeffrey Reiner, who directed David E. Kelley's rejected Wonder Woman pilot, has signed on to helm NBC's The Sixth Gun, Deadline reports. The network ordered the Carlton Cuse-produced pilot just last week.

Based on the Oni Press by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, The Sixth Gun is set in the American West in the aftermath of the Civil War, the comic centers around six pistols of otherworldly power. The most dangerous of the weapons, the Sixth Gun of the title, vanishes, only to resurface in the hands of an innocent girl, reawakening dark forces. Villains believed long dead set their sights on the pistol, and only the gunslinger Drake Sinclair stands in their way.

Ryan Condal, who penned the adaptation of Radical Publishing's Hercules: The Thracian War for director Brett Ratner, will write the pilot. Eric Gitter and Andy Borne of Closed on Mondays, the sister company of Oni Press, are executive producing.

Reiner's television credits also include Awake, The Event, Friday Night Lights and Caprica.

The Sixth Gun previously had been in development as a miniseries for NBC's cable sibling Syfy. The first issue of the series, which debuted on Free Comic Book Day 2010, can be read at Robot 6.
