My pal Stony e-mailed me his suggestion, Hellboy: The Wolves of Saint August, the first Helboy story that Mike Mignola wrote all on his own. It originally appeared in Dark Horse Presents in 1994 and then was collected (with some additional pages) by Mignola into a trade paperback in 1995 (and then later re-collected into a larger trade paperback later on).

This story was the first appearance of Father Kelly, an old associate of Hellboy's. Kelly becomes the new priest for a small town in Europe. When Kelly attempts to re-open a town chapel...well...things go poorly...

This is the first appearance of Dr. Kate Corrigan, one of the most famous members of the B.P.R.D. This is Kate's first field mission. She discovers a secret about the town when she and Hellboy go to investigate...

The pair get sucked into this town filled with ghosts, and then they meet up with a number of spirits, including (much to Hellboy's dismay), the spirit of Father Kelly!

Spoooooky.

Besides the amazing Mignola artwork, Stony suggested this tale because he felt that "Mignola uses a rich backstory of European folklore, tragedy and the inflexibility of doctrine to build up a slow, creeping sense of dread in this tale of true terror. "
