The Western epic "The Revenant" leads the field for the 88th Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best picture, best director and best actor, followed closely by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with 10 -- among them, best picture and best director.

They're joined in the best picture category by “The Big Short,” "Bridge of Spies," "Brooklyn," "The Martian, "Room" and "Spotlight."

In addition to Alejandro G. Inarritu for "The Revenant" and George Miller for "Fury Road," best director nods went to Adam McKay for "The Big Short," Lenny Abrahamson for "Room" and Tom McCarthy for "Spotlight." Noticeably absent from the list is Ridley Scott, whose "Martian" racked up nominations for best actor (Matt Damon), visual effects, adapted screenplay, editing and sound, in addition to best picture.

Damon faces competition for best actor from Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Revenant"), Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"), Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs") and Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl"). Best actress nods went to Cate Blanchett ("Carol"), Brie Larson ("Room"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Joy"), Charlotte Rampling ("45 Years") and Saorise Ronan ("Brooklyn").

Jennifer Jason Leigh ("The Hateful Eight") led the supporting actress field, joined by Rooney Mara ("Carol"), Rachel McAdams ("Spotlight"), Alicia Vikander ("The Danish Girl") and Kate Winslet ("Steve Jobs"). As expected, Sylvester Stallone secured a supporting actor nomination for "Creed" in a category that includes Christian Bale "The Big Short"), Tom Hardy ("The Revenant"), Mark Ruffalo ("Spotlight") and Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies").

Although "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" didn't receive a nod for the top prize, it did garner five nominations, including best original score, visual effects and sound editing.

The full list of nominees can be found below. The 88th Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 28 in ceremony broadcast live on ABC.
