‘The Pugémon Project’ reimagines Pokémon as adorable pugs

Bringing together his love of dogs and his love of Pokémon, illustrator Sean Dowling has launched “The Pugémon Project,” which reimagines the little pocket monsters as — you guessed it — pugs. Specifically, the first generation of Pokémon.

“Really, they are just dogs with cool magical powers and maybe wings … or like … is an insect,” Dowling explains on his Kickstarter page. “But deep down, they are all dogs.”

Yes, the artist has launched a crowdfunding campaign, not to pay for him to draw all 150 original Pokémon — “I’m going to be doing that anyway” — but rather so those interested can purchase a poster, art cards or a book.

Dowling says the project began when he drew Bulbasaur as a pug (above), and it kind of snowballed from there. To date, he’s drawn 110, meaning he’ll have caught ’em all in no time.
