The wait for “Daredevil’s” second season is almost over. In a little over a month’s time, fans of the Man Without Fear and the Punisher will get something many have been waiting a few decades to see: a live-action showdown between the two street-level vigilantes. The first full-length trailer for “Daredevil” season two plays up the conflicts between the two and their differing methodologies. This is not going to be an easy fight for Daredevil for a number of reasons.
In addition to posing an external threat of violence, the arrival of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle poses a moral dilemma for the constantly questioning Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). Is it right to kill criminals? Is Daredevil really a man of “half-measures,” as the Punisher says? This trailer is all about the Punisher and, appropriately, includes some truly punishing — and potentially punishing — moments.
Punisher’s modus operandi has been crystal clear from the start in the comics: he’s the judge, jury and executioner for every criminal he comes across or hunts down, no matter how big or small the crime. The trailer, which focuses solely on Frank Castle and his impact on Hell’s Kitchen, lays out the new character’s mission: “he’s tracking gangs to their home turf and taking them out with military precision.” Yep, that sounds like the Punisher all right! On top of that, one cop warns Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) that Hell’s Kitchen is “about to explode.” Season one’s Kingpin was a major adversary, for sure, but he was bound by his own moral code; the Punisher really is a wild card, and this trailer makes that known.
In The Crossfire
The trailer also gives us a look inside Daredevil’s reasons for taking the Punisher out of the picture. While we see Castle standing on a rooftop with a rifle in his arms, we hear Murdock ask, “How much longer before innocent people start getting caught in his crossfire?” While Daredevil’s obviously no fan of gangs (he took down more than a few gang organizations in season one), his Catholic faith (and also Catholic guilt) prevent him from crossing that line — a line the Punisher crossed long ago.
Hallway Fight 2
One of the most talked about scenes in season one involved a battered and broken Daredevil, pre-super-suit, fighting his way through a hallway in a brutal one-take fight scene. The trailer includes a callback to that fight scene, as Daredevil strides down a hallway, knocking out the light before engaging a number of attackers in another one-against-everyone corridor brawl. This time around, though, Murdock’s wearing his padded Daredevil suit. Imagine the kind of punishment this guy can dole out when he’s not physically broken and actually wearing some protection.
Daredevil vs. Punisher
The trailer’s voiceover lays out more of Daredevil and Punisher’s conflicting ideas, with Punisher saying DD’s unable to “finish the job” and calling him a “coward.” Them’s most definitely fighting words, and the trailer gives us just a taste of these two going at it. Fists fly, insults are lobbed and blood is spilled all before Matt Murdock hits the pavement. This could be the most punishing fight — or the first of many such fights — in Daredevil’s hero career.
The trailer ends by teasing the emotional and mental punishment that will be waged by Elektra (Elodie Yung). “Daredevil” season two will also introduce the iconic assassin, and the clip ends with a plug for next week’s presumably Elektra-focused trailer. This time around, though, we just hear a brief exchange: Murdock’s breathless and panicked “Elektra” and her cold, almost sing-songy “Hello, Matthew.” As former college sweethearts, these two have an intimate history. Encountering his assassin ex-girlfriend is probably not going to solve any of the moral problems Daredevil’s up against. Elektra’s only going to complicate matters more — and we’ll see what that looks like next week.
