The follow-up to the box-office hit The Muppets will be a comedy caper in the tradition of 1981’s The Great Muppet Caper, co-writer Nicholas Stoller has revealed. And if Disney has its way, the sequel could arrive in theaters as early as summer 2013.
“I think it’s similar to the first one in that the first one certainly had dramatic connections to the first Muppet movie, but it was a whole new thing, hopefully,” Stoller, who’s writing the follow-up with The Muppets director James Bobin, told Collider. “This is the same thing. We love The Great Muppet Caper and we love Muppets Take Manhattan and whatnot. So this has some elements of that, but it’s different because it’s in the tone of what James and I like to do.”
Although Stoller thinks that summer 2013 target date is unrealistic, he and Bobin have already begun work on the screenplay, which the writer revealed will introduce new Muppets and maybe even have room for a cameo by Jason Segel.
