‘The Mortal Instruments’ Moving From Film to TV

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bone wasn’t a box-office juggernaut, but producer Constantin Film thinks there’s still life in the franchise — on television. According to The Hollywood Reporter, production will begin next year, with former Helix showrunner Ed Decter at the helm.

The 2013 adaptation of the bestselling YA fantasy novel made $90.5 million worldwide off of a $60 million budget, so it wasn’t a flop. However, it didn’t perform as well as those involved had hoped. In October 2013, Constantin said it was examining the problems of first film, and going “back to the drawing board.”

“It actually makes sense to do [the novels] as a TV series,” Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz said. “There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”

The article also mentions Constantin might take the Resident Evil franchise to TV as well. No other details were offered, but expect more news on that as it develops.
